Title: (Innovation)2 = Gender inclusion to foster innovation in Space

Objective: The event aims to convey the key-message to the audience: women sound pioneer in starting new roles during the game-changing era in the Space sector

Background: NewSpace’s features includes entrepreneurship-driven missions; the accomplishment of the mission comprehends successful business performance to serve and satisfy users’ needs. The upcoming private sector initiatives are labelled by man- face and a deeper analysis brings to the light active role participation in making these new endeavours happen.

Title: Key Note Speech on “Can space help us imagine a more equitable world?”

Speakers:

  • Welcome: Luisella Giulicchi, WIA-E President and Chair A.I.
  • Keynote Speech: Danielle Wood, assistant professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab

Dr. Wood leads the Space Enabled Research Group seeking to advance justice in earth's complex systems using designs enabled by space. Dr. Wood is a scholar of societal development with a background that includes satellite design, earth science applications, systems engineering, and technology policy for the US and emerging nations. In her research, Dr. Wood designs innovative systems that harness space technology addressing development challenges worldwide. Wood’s research also develops systems analysis tools improving decision making during complex systems design. Most recently, Dr. Wood worked as the Applied Sciences Manager within the Earth Science Division of Goddard Space Flight Center.

Title: Key Note Speech on “Most Promising Newcomer” in the Women in Industry awards and her experience.”

Speakers:

  • Welcome: Annamaria Nassisi, Director of WIA-E Communication
  • Keynote Speech: Sabrina Andiappane, Young R&D Engineer with outstanding experience in robotic space missions - Thales Alenia Space

Sabrina won the outstanding nomination “Most Promising Newcomer in the Women in Industry” awards 2017 organized by French business magazine L’Usine Nouvelle.

Among others, she is a mentor in the "Elles bougent" (“Women on the Move”) association, and is part of a working group created by the exchange committee in Thales Alenia Space in Cannes: “XYZ on the intergenerational equation".

Sabrina has a two-pronged role in the company: RF (radio-frequency) and onboard data management engineer; and R&D project management (ESA, CNES, European Union). Sabrina is currently working on an H2020 project, "Space Research Cluster on Space Robotics": I3DS (Integrated 3D Sensors) which is part of the European Commission's "Strategic Research on Space Robotics Technologies". The aim is to develop the building blocks for tomorrow’s robotic space missions. I3DS is one of six projects being conducted at the same time. Each project concerns a building block, and has a consortium. Sabrina is in charge of the I3DS consortium of ten partners.

Title: Key Note Speech on “WIA-E Grant experience and presentation of winner project”

Speakers:

  • Welcome: Annamaria Nassisi, Director of WIA-E Communication
  • Keynote Speech: Helia Sharif, WIA-E member

Helia holds a B. A. Sc. in Systems Engineering from Simon Fraser University and a M. A. Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University in Canada. Additionally, she has completed the Space Studies Program at the International Space University in Austria. Her passion for space and robotics has lead her to pursue a number of exciting and unique opportunities ranging from camping in the Arctic while working for NASA, to developing image processing algorithm at the Advanced Concepts Team in the European Space Agency, and for Canadian Space Agency’s micro-rover: Kapvik.

She pursued a doctoral thesis research degree funded by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to train satellites become smarter. She’s responsible for the design of an autonomous vision-based system on board aerial vehicles to help in guidance and navigation manoeuvres in real-time.
