Talks and workshops for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the association Women In Aerospace Europe (WIA-E Barcelona) , with the support of the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya ( IEEC ), has organized a family day consisting of different talks and workshops in the field of science and technology for all ages.
TALKS:
Talk 1 – Origin of the solar system on the Moon: what do the meteorites tell us?
By: Marina Martínez , scientist who studies the geological composition of samples obtained from the Moon.
Time and duration: 16:30 with a duration of approximately one hour. Free entry.
Marina Martínez has a doctorate in Planetary and Earth Sciences from the University of New Mexico, USA, a degree in Geology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a master’s degree in Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology from the University of Barcelona.
Talk 2 – A day on the International Space Station
By: Cesc Betorz , former flight director of the Columbus laboratory of the International Space Station.
Time and duration: 18:00 with a duration of approximately one hour. Free entry.
Cesc Betorz is an aerospace engineer and road engineer from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and has extensive experience in systems engineering and space flight operations. In 2011 he joined the flight control team of the International Space Station as a systems engineer and in 2014 he assumed the position of flight director of the Station’s Columbus laboratory.. In 2019 he joining the guidance, navigation and control department at Rocket Factory Augsburg in Munich, where he led the development of the guidance and navigation system for the RFA One launcher and its subsequent testing and integration into the rocket’s avionics. He is currently a member of the Space Communications department of i2CAT and is the coordinator of the Minairó space mission, the third mission of the NewSpace strategy of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
WORKSHOPS:
SPACE TRAVEL, INTO ORBIT AND BEYOND
Every now and then we see or hear about rockets and space mission launches far from home, but what would the experience really be like if we were the protagonists? How does a launch work and what would we see and find ourselves orbiting the Earth? In this session we will visualize the process of traveling in space, we will enter the orbit of our planet from the Plana de Vic and we will explore some objects of the solar system.
Times: 16.30 / 17.30 / 18.30
Duration of the workshop: 45 min
Free entry
Organized by Daniel Sors Raurell, Office of Services and Industrial Promotion at the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC)
EXPLORE SPACE WITH ROCKETS
The main objective of this workshop is to explain what rockets are, how they work and why they are so important for exploring space and getting to know our surroundings better. Next, we will propose some hypotheses with the aim of designing and building a paper rocket and its launch pad. And in the end… we’ll make them fly!
Times: 16.30 / 18.00 h
Workshop duration: 1.5 h
Free entry
Organized by AulaSPUTNIK
EXPERIMENTS WITH MICROGRAVITY
What happens when we produce a flame in microgravity? What shape will it take? How long will it last before dying out? If you want to know this and much more, come to this super fun workshop!
Hours: From 4:30 p.m.
Duration of the workshop: 15 minutes and will be carried out continuously
Free entry
Organized by MART XXI and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya ( EETAC )
BUILD A RE-ENTRY CAPSULE
We propose to you to design and build a capsule that, launched from a very high height, can withstand the impact with the ground, and above all, the “astronaut” traveling inside must survive!
Times: 4.30 p.m. / 5.30 p.m. / 6.30 p.m.
Duration of the workshop: 1 hour
Free entrance
Organized by GOSTEM
A SPACE ESCAPE ROOM: “Treasure Hunt”
In this physical and mental adventure game you will have to find the clues to find the treasure! This is a small experience where knowledge and intelligence will take you on a space journey. But you must not get lost and find all the clues hidden in the environment.
Hours: From 4:30 p.m.
Duration of the workshop: 30 min and will be carried out continuously
Free entry
Organized by WIA-E Barcelona
Come celebrate with us a spatial afternoon with inspiring talks and workshops for all ages!
Free activities and workshops, no prior registration required. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Organized by Women in Aerospace Europe (WIA-E) Barcelona, a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of female talent and leadership at all levels of the European aerospace sector. Research and discovery are passions that change the world. That’s why we decided that, on the occasion of Girls’ and Women’s Day in Science, we wanted to organize family days all over Catalonia with the aim of creating close and flesh-and-blood references. Thus, the aim of this day is that everyone can learn first-hand what the aerospace sector is and what is done in Catalonia, and that girls and boys can consider it as an opportunity for growth or even a professional option. Organized with the support of the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya ( IEEC ).
